The election of the new UP Alumni Association Board of Directors is set from 3 April to 30 May 2023. 

In alphabetical order are the candidates representing all UP units and groups: 

DANTE M. ABANDO (BSCE’86; MBA’95) is the president of Makati Development Corporation;  he received the 2019 UPAA Distinguished Alumni Award in Urban Development and the 2022 UPAE Lifetime Achievement Award.

FELIPE L. ALPAJORA JR. (BFA’92) was a UP Fine Arts faculty member who co-established several companies in the field of communications, film, graphics arts, and other services.  

THADDEUS R. ALVIZO (BSBM’84 cl; AB’85; LLB’89) is a Cebu-based lawyer who helped form the UP Law Alumni Cebu which provides free legal aid.  He also served as a director in the UPAA Board. 

ROBERT LESTER F. ARANTON (AB’84; MMgt’98) is a board member of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority. He served as a trustee of the UP Mindanao Foundation Inc., secretary/director of the UPAA Davao Chapter, and a member of the UPAA Board.

HERMINIO C. BAGRO III (AB’05; JD’09) was a student leader elected as chair of the 2008 UP Diliman Student Council. He served as undersecretary at the Department of Trade and Industry in 2022.  

LEO JULIO R. BALLESFIN (GR’81; BSF’84) was a board topnotcher in 1985 and headed the UPLB Alumni Association in 2013-16 and 2016-20. He was then elected as a member of the UPAA Board of Directors. 

ALFREDO J. BAUTISTA (BSIE’82) is an engineer who worked in manufacturing, real estate, and banking industries. He worked as a director in the UP Alumni Engineers and chair of UP Barkada Inc.

WILFREDO M. CABALLA (AB’69) served as president of the Rotary Club of Marikina North and organizes conferences, assemblies, and forums for which he received awards and citations. He was elected to the UPAA Board in 2015-2018 and on 2018-2021.

 

ROEL Z. CASTRO (BSAB’87) is a business executive active in organizations like the Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, Philippine Electricity Market Corporation, Philippine Red Cross, and UP Visayas Foundation. He is the president/CEO of MORE Electric and Power Corporation. 

JEFFREY JEFFERSON Y. CORONEL (BSEcon’02) is a law teacher, environment advocate, and a managing partner of a Davao-based law firm. He served as vice president of the UPAA-Davao Chapter. 

MACARIO C. GALVEZ, JR. (AB’83) is a pediatrician who served as chair of the board of directors of the Medical Mission Group (MMG) Health Cooperative, currently in charge of the telemedicine platform of the MMG federation.

DENNIS P. GELACIO (BSA’95) is a plant pathologist and an entrepreneur who has been a member of the board of directors of a prominent enterprise in healthcare equipment and supplies since 2005. 

GARRY D. HIDALGO (BSA’97) is the chair of the Rise Up For Sierra Madre Project of the Rotary District 3820. He is an advocate of high value crops production, farm tourism, and urban farming. 

RENE E. MADARANG (AB’81) is a community service leader and the chair/project head of environmental and civic-oriented Rotary and Beta Sigma projects implemented nationwide. He is also a UPAA Board member and of the UP Manila Alumni Association.

MARIA RECELYN A. MARASIGAN (BSDevcom’99; MSIR’20) has extensive experience as a school administrator and as a human relations practitioner with a strong educational background in industrial relations. 

BENJAMIN N. MUEGO (AB’68) is a retired tenured full professor of political science at Bowling Green State University (1980-2010). He was given the 2016 UPAA Distinguished Alumnus Award in Higher Education.

WILLIAM S. PAMINTUAN (AB’85; LLB’89, ROTC’83) is currently the senior vice president and assistant corporate secretary of the Manila Electric Company, a member of the UPAA board of directors, and the board governor of the UP Vanguard, Inc. 

AMINA ZALMIRA T. RASUL-BERNARDO (AB’75) is the president of the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy and a member of the ASEAN Women for Peace Registry (AWPR).  She received the 2019 UNDP’S N-PEACE Award and the UPAA Most Distinguished Alumna in 2019.

RAUL R. REYES (BSHRA’87; LLB’84) served in Department of Interior and Local Government, the Commission on Elections, and the Bureau of Internal Revenue, among other government agencies. He is a UPAA board member and legal counsel. 

BENIGNO GLENN R. RICAFORTE (BSBio’92; PhD’16) is a professor and a registered microbiologist with 17 years of experience in food production, airline catering, and technical marketing.  

FERNANDO C. SANCHEZ, JR. (BSA’87; MS’94) is a professor of horticulture at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and the ninth chancellor of UPLB from 2014 to 2020.

 

DEOGRACIAS VICTOR B. SAVELLANO (ABEcon’81) served in Ilocos Sur as vice governor, governor, and district representative. He was the author of legislations to propel economic development in Ilocos Sur. He is also the head of the UP Manila Alumni chapter.

MARIA ANA TEODORO QUIMBO (BSAEco’84; MSed’94; PhD’03) is a professor in UPLB and was awarded as UP Scientist II. She is an advocate of Lifelong Learning and Quality Education. 

All UPAA members in good standing may claim and cast their ballots at the UPAA office, Room 211 Ang Bahay ng Alumni, Magsaysay Avenue, UP Diliman, Quezon City, until May 30, 2023.
