In preparation for the 24th UPMAS Grand Scientific Symposium (GSS) and following a mandate from UPMAS, the Cebu Chapter reorganized and established a Central Visayas Chapter to include members from Bohol and Negros Oriental. The move to create a Regional Chapter was borne from the need to stay true to the values of UPMAS: that is, to develop a culture of alumni support and to promote the welfare of its members.
When the GSS was held in Cebu 20 years ago, there were not enough alumni to constitute a formal chapter. Fast forward to 2023, the region has seen more of its alumni coming home to Region 7 and the Queen City of the South .
Heeding the call to serve our countrymen, an increasing number of alumni have returned to their provinces to practice. It is estimated that there are now over 70 UPMAS physicians who call Central Visayas home, with the bulk practicing in Cebu.
Cognizant of the need to reorganize, a broader Regional Chapter constituted. Elections were held on February 12, 2023.
Heading the Central Visayas Chapter will be Dr. Virginia Abalos, Class 1981, a multi-awarded Obstetrician-Gynecologist who was recently recognized as an Outstanding Physician for the year 2022 by the Philippine Medical Association. Dr. Abalos will be ably supported by Dr. Janette Dela Calzada, of Class 1995 as Vice-President; Dr. Joshua Abejero of Class 2013 as Secretary; Dr. Judith Akol of Class 1997 as Treasurer; Dr. Tony San Juan ofClass 1994 as PRO; and Dr. Kazan Baluyot of Class 2001 as Board Member from Bohol; and Dr. John Anthony Tindoc of Class 2013 as Board Member from Negros Oriental.
The newly elected officers and board members of the UPMAS Central Visayas Chapter were formally inducted on March 8, 2023, at Cuarto Hotel by UPMAS President, Dr. Michael Tee. Before the ceremony, Dr. Tee emphasized the values of honor and excellence in every UP alumni.
All the officers and board members were present with Dr. Kazan Baluyot and Dr. John Anthony Tindoc joining the ceremony via the virtual platform. Witnessing the event were the members of the 24th Grand Scientific Symposium Organizing Committee. True to form, after the induction ceremony, the Organizing Committee buckled down and continued its work in preparing for the Grand Scientific Symposium to be held this October.
With the establishment of the Central Visayas Chapter, the members are optimistic that the region will continue to flourish and that more of its alumni return home. The 24th GSS aims to showcase the best of the region and of its alumni. This is the epitome of the UP Spirit...to nourish, lift and support each other and to strengthen bonds for the benefit of our community and country.
