Dr. Jean Pierre “JP” Leung embodies the mission of the UP College of Medicine of “service for the underserved”. After medical school, he worked as a community physician among the Mangyans of Mindoro. He then trained in orthopedics at the Philippine General Hospital, further strengthening his resolve to serve the poor. Dr. JP decided to practice among marginalized areas of Benguet province. He also chose to practice in a government hospital, Benguet General Hospital, where he was the only orthopedic surgeon at the time. Here, he successfully married the holistic approach of community medicine and the specialist management of orthopedics.
Dr. JP also expanded the scope of his services through training. He taught medical and physical therapy students in Saint Louis University, as well as orthopedic and general surgery residents in Baguio General Hospital. He taught orthopedic courses across the country and internationally.
In 2019, Dr. JP helped establish the Clubfoot Clinic, which provided free treatment to clubfoot patients from the entire Cordillera region. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he set up the Bicycle Brace Delivery System, a home service to clubfoot patients who also needed braces.
For nearly 30 years, Dr. JP has made profound contributions to the Filipino community.
