UPMAS ALUMNI AWARDS 2019

General information and Guidelines

The UPMAS 2019 Awards Committee is now calling for nominations for the following awards, which will be given during the UPMAS Homecoming Celebration on December 19, 2019.

  • Distinguished Alumnus/Alumni Award/s
  • Outstanding Educator Award/s
  • Outstanding Researcher Award/s
  • Outstanding Medical Service Award/s*
  • Outstanding in Community Service and Public Health Award/s*
  • Most Distinguished Class of the Year Award
  • Alumni Family of the Year Award

*Awards given to nominees residing in the Philippines only

Nominations for the awards may be made by any UP Medicine alumnus who is an UPMAS life-member in good standing. The UPMAS Awards Committee will evaluate the nominees and recommend the awardees to the UPMAS Board of the Directors for approval.

 

The guidelines for these eight types of awards are detailed below.

UPMAS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS/ALUMNI AWARD/S

The Distinguished Alumnus/Alumni Award/s gives recognition to alumnus/alumni whose exceptional achievements and excellent contributions, in his/her chosen field, bring about distinct honor to the University and UPMAS and substantial benefits to the society in which s/he is or has been active, whether this is at the local, national or international level. S/He also exhibits sustained interest and participation in medical endeavors.

Criteria:

  1. An alumnus/alumna of the UP College of Medicine
  2. Nominee and nominator should be UPMAS life-members
  3. Of good moral and professional standing
  4. At least 25 years from date of graduation
  5. Distinguished himself/herself as a teacher/trainor in a recognized medical school or institution.
  6. Distinguished himself/herself as a clinical specialist or a public health specialist
  7. Conducted researches and other creative works, which contributed to science, technology, National development policies and programs and the well-being of the community s/he serves
  8. He held an important or a key position of leadership in the community, academe or the country

 

UPMAS OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD/S

*Awards given to selected nominees residing in the Philippines only

The Outstanding Educator Award/s is given to the nominee/s who has demonstrated effective and inspiring leadership in the field of teaching, i.e. achievements can be attributed more to the person than to the official position/job title s/he has held, and devoted himself/herself largely to medical education and excelled in this endeavor. This is open for both local and international-based alumni.

Criteria:

  1. An alumnus/alumna of the UP College of Medicine
  2. Nominee and nominator should be UPMAS life-members
  3. Of good moral and professional standing
  4. At least 15 years of teaching experience at a recognized Philippine medical school or institution
  5. Has exemplified the qualities of a caring and compassionate mentor in teaching and advising of medical students/healthcare givers
  6. Has possessed the personal qualities necessary to the practice of patient-centered medicine
  7. Received recognition through award testimonials or citations for teaching from students or fellow faculty members

 

UPMAS OUTSTANDING RESEARCHER AWARD/S

The Outstanding Researcher Award/s is given to the nominee/s whose work has had a substantial impact on the people, geographical area, or sector, in the field of biomedical/public health research, both qualitatively (how deep, or transformative) and quantitatively (impact to how many people or groups benefited within the area or sector). This is open for both local and international-based alumni.

Criteria:

  1. An alumnus/alumna of the UP College of Medicine
  2. Nominee and nominator should be UPMAS life-members
  3. Of good moral and professional standing
  4. Must have completed at least five (5) researches as Principal Investigator. The copies of five (5 key papers by the Nominee as Principal Investigator must be submitted to the UPMAS Awards Committee
  1. a) The research findings and creative works should have contributed to science, technology, national development policies and programs or to the culture and well-being of the country
  1. b) Researches have been published in peer-reviewed journals or presented in local/international conferences
  2. Recognition in the form of citation, awards and other forms or recognition from academic institutions, scientific or learned societies (national or international) given to the research/creative works shall be taken into account.

 

UPMAS OUTSTANDING MEDICAL SERVICE AWARD/S

The Outstanding Service Award/s is conferred to the nominee/s who devoted himself/herself to the community medical service with selfless dedication and whose work/service has clearly benefited other people, group at large, and not merely private or personal interests.

Criteria:

  1. An alumnus/alumna of the UP College of Medicine
  2. Nominee and nominator should be UPMAS life-members
  3. Of good moral and professional standing
  4. At least ten (10) years rendering medical service with a hospital or institution, preferably one that is rendering service to the underserved area or with indigent and marginalized individuals
  5. Distinguished himself/herself as a committed, dedicated and relevant medical practitioner
  6. Developed and implemented an innovative approach to rending medical service within a hospital or institution, preferably with indigent and marginalized individuals
  7. Works with other disciplines within the institution and demonstrates a genuine Partnership with the various sectors with the institution, including the patients

 

UPMAS OUTSTADING IN COMMUNITY SERVICE AND PUBLIC HEALTH AWARD/S

The Outstanding in Community Service and Public Health Award/s is given to the nominee/s  has devoted himself/herself to community service with selfless dedication. His/her work may include participation in policy making, organizing public health programs, researches on this field and implementing effective improvement strategies.

Criteria:

  1. An alumnus/alumna of the UP College of Medicine
  2. Nominee and nominator should be UPMAS life-members
  3. Of good moral and professional standing
  4. At least ten (10) years rendering community or population-based or public health service
  5. Distinguished himself/herself as a committed, dedicated and relevant population-based or public health worker
  6. Contributed significantly to the improvement of the health and development conditions of a community or population group or sector, preferably and underserved or marginalized population or sector
  7. Developed and implemented an innovative community or population-based or public health service approach
  8. Community, population-based and public health service work are focused towards health promotion and disease prevention
  9. Works with all the disciplines and sectors, especially the marginalized members of the community; and demonstrates genuine partnership with all the sectors in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of community, population-based or public health programs

 

UPMAS DISTINGUISHED CLASS OF THE YEAR

The Distinguished Class of the Year Award gives recognition to the class that has collectively rendered the most contributions to the advancement of the profession through service to the country, the College and UPMAS.

Criteria:

  1. Two-third (2/3) of the members of the class are UPMAS life-members and nominated by an UPMAS life-member
  2. At least 25 years from date of graduation
  3. The class members must have distinguished themselves as national/community leaders, teachers/educators, researchers and/or administrators of health-related institution

 

UPMAS FAMILY OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Family of the Year Award will give special recognitions to family/ies that has collectively distinguished itself in the service of the profession. Regardless of the current place of residence or citizenship, each of these alumni in the family must have: spent some years in the Philippines after their studies in U.P., rendered some service to the nation, and continued to uphold the principles and values that the University and UPMAS stands for.

Criteria:

  1. One or both parents are alumni of the UP College of Medicine
  2. Alumni family members and the nominator should be UPMAS life-members
  3. All of the members-alumni are of good moral and professional standing
  4. At least one (1) child is a UP College of Medicine Alumnus
  5. Members must have distinguished themselves in the practice of medical profession
  6. Members must have distinguished themselves in the academic community and/or  in meaningful research
  7. Members must have involved themselves or are currently actively involved in civic and community work.

 

All UPMAS awardees of the current year will be automatically nominated for next year’s UP Alumni Association (UPAA) Awards.

INSTRUCTIONS AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR NOMINATORS

  1. Nominations shall be made by accomplishing three (3) copies of the corresponding attached pdf fillable forms. The forms have a checklist of supporting documents required. Please be guided accordingly.

  1. For the following Awards: Distinguished Alumnus, Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Researcher, Outstanding Service (Philippines), Outstanding in Community Service and Public Health, documentation in support of the statement of achievements, such as copies of diplomas, certificates, citations, news articles, photographs, etc, may be submitted in duplicate. Three copies of the nominee’s recent photograph (2”x2”) should be submitted.
  2. Individual nominees must be UPMAS Lifetime Members.
  3. The UPMAs prefers that, besides submitting the nomination forms and supporting documents in three (3) paper copies, nominators should also prepare and send an electronic or digital version of these materials, in the form of an email attachment or CD. These must be delivered or mailed to:

  1. Nominations should be received by the UPMAS not later than Friday, September 14, 2018, 12nn. Only complete and properly accomplished forms shall be accepted.
  2. The UPMAS Awards Committee will deliberate on the nominations and may request additional information or documents from the nominators. The Committee’s recommendations are submitted to the UPMAS Board for approval and is final.
  3. The UPMAS will immediately notify the awardee of her/his election for the award. In the event that the awardee declines to accept the award and/or fails to attend the awarding ceremonies, the UPMAS reserves the right to withdraw the award.
  4. Awards may not be given in all categories every year. There may be no nominees in a certain category, or the nominees may not meet the standards for granting the award.
  5. All Alumni Awardees must attend the awarding ceremonies during the UPMAS Homecoming Ball on Thursday, 20 December 2018, 6:00 P.M to personally receive their award. Alumni members of the families so recognized are expected to attend the General Alumni Homecoming on 20 December 2018 when the U.P. families will be recognized. However, at least one alumnus or alumna member is required to personally accept this recognition on behalf of the family.
  6. The UPMAS reserves the right to keep two (2) copies of the nomination papers and to dispose of the rest not claimed after two (2) weeks from the award day.
